Client Benefit

Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc.

A market leader in global energy transportation services, OSG owns and operates a fleet of more than 100 international flag and U.S. flag vessels that transport crude oil, refined petroleum products and gas worldwide. OSG has purchased two innovative systems from Datatrac Limited; one to allow the generation of engine room logs electronically (EERL), another, Envirotrac, to track the integrity of the vessel waste stream systems. These applications are now being installed across the OSG Fleet.

Performance Indicators

Datatrac has developed a Data Collection and Management System that enables the crew to collect data that will feed into a PI and ultimately into a KPI as an integral part of their job.  The initial data collected is usually Engine Room data and customers may then decide to gather additional items such as position, speed, consumption, wind, current, slip as well as engine rpm.   Fuel consumption data can provide valuable information specifically required for Charterers to help determine the most economical speed. The data collected enables a Voyage Log to be compiled from the beginning to the end of the voyage.  All of which can maximize performance, increase efficiencies and, most importantly, save fuel.

Performance Data

Datatrac is an innovative Data capture company that has developed a digital engine room log and asset management system for hydraulic hoses. Using contact memory tags and ruggedised handheld tag readers, Datatrac enables its clients to collect complete engine room log data automatically without the tedium of typing the data into an engine room computer. The digital log is produced in Microsoft Excel for manipulation thereafter.

Datatrac has emerged as an industry leader at capturing performance data to provide its ship owning clients with the strategic advantage over their competitors with the ability, by reference to historic benchmarks, to reduce costs and at the same time monitor whole ship performance.   Such monitoring can indicating bottom fouling at an early stage; will avoid charter party disputes on fuel burnt in auxiliaries or boilers for other purposes and allow comparison to be made across a fleet of sister vessels to find poorly performing units.

Fuel Saving Economics

  • Vessel Daily Time Charter cost$14,000
  • 45 day round voyage with 30 days steaming,
  • 1 knot slower adds approximately 2 days to the voyage,
  • 1 knot slower saves approximately 5 mts fuel per day.
  • Increased time cost 2 days x 14,000 = $28,000
  • Increased auxiliary engine costs 2 days x 1.5mts x $450 = $1,350.
  • Total increase costs = $29,350
  • Main engine fuel saving = 30 days x 5 tons x $320 per ton = $48,000.
